George Strait - I can still make Cheyenne

Song Lyrics

I am a huge George Strait fan, and this is one of my favorite songs. I grew up listening to George Strait, so I guess it should be only natural that his song lyrics end up in this blog.
I pretty much grew up in the city from the age of six or seven, but when I was younger... I spent a lot of time horse back with my parents. There are many pictures from my childhood where I am sporting a cowboy hat, or I am atop a horse in the saddle with dad. From this time on, I knew every word to every George Strait and Garth Brooks song.
I like the whole premise of this song. I can relate to it. I had a relationship kind of like this at one point in time. Sometimes you're just preoccupied by something... or there just isn't enough love... and the relationship takes a back seat. Cruel? Yes... but true. It happens. I think the part I really love in these lyrics is this:
"He said, I'm sorry it's come down to this. There's so much about you that I'm gonna miss. But it's alright baby... If I hurry I can still make Cheyenne. Gotta go now baby... If I hurry I can still make Cheyenne."
I've heard this song a lot through my life. I've always liked it... but there came a point one day, when the lyrics just hit me. "Wow, I can totally relate to the guy... and I know exactly what the girl is going through too. I've been there!" I think most of us can relate to these lyrics from one point in our lives or another.
(P.S. This photo is one I actually took at a George Strait concert a few years ago.)
George Strait - I can still make Cheyenne

Song Lyrics

Her telephone rang 'bout a quarter to nine
She heard his voice on the other end of the line
She wondered what was wrong this time
She never knew what his calls might bring
With a cowboy like him it could be anything
And she always expected the worst
In the back of her mind

He said, it's cold out here and I'm all alone
I didn't make the short go, again and I'm coming home
I know I've been away too long
I never got a chance to write or call
And I know this rodeo has been hard on us all
But I'll be home soon
and honey is there something wrong

She said, don't bother comin' home
By the time you get here I'll be long gone
There's somebody new and he sure ain't no rodeo man
He said, I'm sorry it's come down to this
There's so much about you that I'm gonna miss
But it's alright baby
If I hurry I can still make Cheyenne
Gotta go now baby
If I hurry I can still make Cheyenne

He left that phone danglin' off the hook
Then slowly turned around and gave it one last look
Then he just walked away
He aimed his truck towards that Wyoming line
With a little luck he could still get there in time
And in that Cheyenne wind he could still hear her say

She said, don't bother comin' home
By the time you get here I'll be long gone
There's somebody new and he sure ain't no rodeo man
He said, I'm sorry it's come down to this
There's so much about you that I'm gonna miss
But it's alright baby
If I hurry I can still make Cheyenne
Gotta go now baby
If I hurry I can still make Cheyenne
