This song?!?!

Song

Alright, so this recently happened to me on a road trip that I have just returned from. My girlfriend and I were driving, and were investigating the local air waves of radio stations in a new town. It's a bigger city, so there was an abundance to choose from.

To tell you the truth... I can't even remember the particular song in question. Here's what happened though. Her eyes lit up and she immediately got excited. The search for a station had temporarily and abruptly ended. I half heartily laughed, and gave her that look that both encompasses a question and a mocking disapproval. I'm sure I said something along the lines of "This song?!?! Are you serious?"

As if I had never addressed her in the first place; she looked out the windshield, turned up the radio and belted the song out the way you would if you were alone, cleaning the house. Not shocked at her response (yes, this has happened many times), I proceeded to tell her how bad this song sucked (this also has happened many times). My words were falling on deaf ears. The lyrics kept coming, and an immobile sort of passenger seat dance started to take place.

I was overcome with some twisted sort of pied piper trans or possibly just an "if you can't beat them, join them" type of surrender. I accompanied her, turning her poppy solo, into an off-key duet. I had disgracefully, but just as enthusiastically now joined the song. I came to the shameful realization that I was hitting the lyrics with an 80-90% accuracy.

Honestly... we all know it

I'm not actually the type to worry about this sort of thing. Although, I'm not quite what you would call... proud of it either. I do think however, that we all do this. I recall being on high school road trips, when a van full of like seven pre-college senior guys, were all animatedly belting out the lyrics to Britney Spears' "Lucky." I think pretty much anywhere, you could get any random sample of people to do a decent job of singing Michael Bolton's "When a man loves a woman." We all know those shameful tunes, and could most likely carol out the lyrics to embarrassing pop songs at the drop of a hat. I know this. Honestly... we all know it.

Whatever you like... Cow version

Song Lyrics... Twisted

Like T.I.'s song Whatever you like? Yeah, I guess it's kind of catchy. Well, I found a song on YouTube where the guy in the video changed the lyrics. The lyrics are now centered around the bovine, and are not quite the same as the original version of the song. I found it pretty entertaining and thought I'd share with you guys. Check it out.

Currently Reading...

The Book: Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs: A Low Culture Manifesto (by Chuck Klosterman)

This is a recommendation from an old friend, who I haven't seen in nearly two years. It was about two years ago he told me to read Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs. I told him I'd look into it. And I did.

For the last couple of years, I'd see it at the book store. Maybe I'd hear it referenced. Or online here or there. I never really gave it much thought. That is until today. I came across it at the public library in the book on tape (which now should be called a book on CD... soon to be pod cast) section. I thought, "Hey... what the hell?" and checked it out.

I was meeting up with my girlfriend for lunch today. I had about 20 minutes to kill before she got there. I popped it in on the drive over, and my initial thought was "Wow... is this guy going to be the narrator the whole CD?" It is read by the author (Chuck Klosterman), who has a nasally voice with nerd-like vocabulary. I won't lie... my initial thought was "Shit... what did I get myself into?"

However, after letting it play for five minutes, I didn't care. I was fully engulfed in his hilarious monologue. He is even self-aware of his nerdiness as he compares himself to Woody Allen. In part of the first chapter he associates himself with a class of intellectual nerds, who are, in reality, unattractive to women. Upon turning the case over and seeing his picture... I understood why he would compare himself to Woody Allen.

Anyway, from what I can tell... this is going to be a great read (or... technically... I guess, a great listen)! The book's premise is (according to Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sex,_Drugs_and_Cocoa_Puffs ) a collection of 18 comedic essays on pop culture. Chuck also writes for Esquire Magazine and Spin Magazine.

Super Soul Sis - Warren G Regulate Album

Song Lyrics

Wow, OK... So my girlfriend and I are laying bed tonight. After finding (what I thought was) an old mixed tape... yes, TAPE (as in cassette), we started to come up with old songs. We were talking about all the old radio songs we used to like. We end up stuck in this mid-90's area. We're singing all the songs we can remember the lyrics to. We found out quick that song lyrics become a little fuzzy after 10+ years. No matter, we still had a lot of material.

Then I came to the Warren G album. Man did this joint bring back some memories! The album? Album title:Regulate...g funk era (1994). My good friend and I must have a played this CD over 200 times in one summer. We knew all the words, to almost every track. Mix cool west coast hip-hop with dry, hot weather... and you have 5th grade summer right there. Vaguely... I remember some Coolio in there too!

Super Soul Sis - Warren G

The Lyrics:

Well it's the super, the duper, the Landcruisin trooper?

Take action? at times, they hang on my rhyme like Mr. Cooper

I'm takin you to a zone that's much far from wackness

So please could you tell me oh bud buddy can you hack this?

Yo, oh no, grab a hold of fadeables, gettin her flows on

like FloJo, runs in a marathon

Smooth like chocolate, so call me Big Mamma Kane

Feels like another one goin out for her reign

Step back, because I happen to be all that plus tax

I got more subscribers than HBO or Cinemax

Mile after mile I rip style after style

Crack dope in all the vials, ooh I'm glad I used Dial

Cause it can get funky when I'm singin my song

but I just flow on, and so on, I'm stinky cause I roll on

And then I hear rhyme callin I won't give it a rest

That's how I got the motherfuckin Super on my chest

*chorus*(Snoop: Fly through the sky gettin love)

(?: the whole wide world will watch me)

(repeat 2X)

Mister it's the, Masta Aces of the spade

Rappin skills are thinner than niggaz on AIDS

Up up and away it's the Super Soul Sis

I talk so much shit I got, halitosis

I knows this, I flows this, I'm funky, you stank

You a walkin blood bank I'm withdrawin' with my shank

Thanks for the memories, remember me no remedies

surrender the vicinity or catch a cap like a Kennedy

Cause I'm the Superwoman rapper I deserve a hail

Chasin MC's, got em on the run like Smurfs from Azrael

No bluff, the magic I puff, I'm chokin sho nuff

I'm takin a bite out of rappers as if my name was MC Negra

(Warren G: She's hotter than the South land on fire)

All you MC's desire, to run through my pyre

I'm turnin heads like the Exorcist while flexin this

Cause it's the Super Soul Sis

*chorus*

Sat on the outside, but now I'm the arena

A superfly mackadocious one you never seen a

soulful, cause I got a bowl-full of soul

Strollin because I have no vehicle to roll

But bring it bring it back to the topic of the solar mind

I can flow upbeat, to a slow beat, and be off beat and still on time

I rhyme, and swim waves of soul like Billy Ocean

Never ashy, lyrics that soothe ya like some lotion

Cause I can Krush any Groove bust on any move ya make

I keep my rhymes attached, like trains to a freight

Break ya Achey like Billy Ray, I'm fuckin up the industry

And fins to be,* Nanu Nanu like Mork and Mindy

*chorus*

The New Radicals (Post 2/2)

Song Lyrics

The New Radicals song lyrics to "Someday We'll Know." Again, off of the Maybe you've been brainwashed too album. In my opinion, this song became popular (to people who weren't already The New Radicals fans) after being on the soundtrack to A Walk To Remember. Mandy Moore, Shane West, and Peter Coyote helped rocket this song's publicity with that movie.

I used a Youtube cover video for this post, because it's hard to find one allowed with the original band. The artists who cover the song do a pretty good job on the cover, so I hope you're not disappointed. I personally think they did a great job, and the acoustics are good for where they are playing the song.

I touched in the last post entitled The New Radicals - You get what you give., about how when I hear music by The New Radicals, I can't help but feel good. These two songs are just up beat. I also really like the lyrics in this one.

The Lyrics

Someday We'll Know lyrics

90 miles outside Chicago
Can't stop driving
I don't know why
So many questions
I need an answer
Two years later you're still on my mind
Whatever happened to Emelia Earhart
Who holds the stars up in the sky
Is true love once in a lifetime
Did the captain of the titanic cry
Someday we'll know
If love can move a mountain
Someday we'll know
Why the sky is blue
Someday we'll know
Why I wasn't meant for you
Does anybody know the way to Atlantis
Or what the wind says when she cries
I'm speeding by the place that I met you
For the 97th time tonight
Someday we'll know
If love can move a mountain
Someday we'll know
Why the sky is blue
Someday we'll know
Why I wasn't meant for you
Someday we'll know
Why Samson loved Delilah
One day I'll go
Dancing on the moon
Someday you'll know
That I was the one for you
I bought a ticket to the end of the rainbow
I watched the stars crash in the sea
If I could ask god just one question
Why aren't you here with me
Someday we'll know
If love can move a mountain
Someday we'll know
Why the sky is blue
Someday we'll know
Why I wasn't meant for you
Someday we'll know
Why Samson loved Delilah
One day I'll go
Dancing on the moon
Someday you'll know
That I was the One for you

The New Radicals - You get what you give.

Song Lyrics

These are the complete lyrics with video to The New Radicals song "You get what you give." It's off their Maybe you've been brainwashed too album.

Not too long ago, I didn't even know who this band was. Little did I know, I'd heard their songs on every major late 90's movie, TV show, and random documentaries. I even knew the words to the song. I really liked it.

There is just something about the New Radicals. When I hear their music, it just puts me in a good mood. I guess you can it feel good music. Check out the video and lyrics below. Now tell me that this doesn't make you smile... remember, you only get what you give.

The Lyrics

1, 2, 1, 2, 3

Wake up kids
We've got the dreamers disease
Age fourteen
They got you down on your knees
So polite
You're busy still saying please

Frienemies
Who when you're down ain't your friend
Every night
We smash their mercedes-benz
First we run
And then we laugh till we cry

But when the night is falling
you cannot find the light (light)
If you feel your dreams are dying
Hold tight...

You've got the music in you
Don't let go
You've got the music in you
One dance left
This world is gonna pull through
Don't give up
You've got a reason to live
Can't forget
We only get what we give

I'm coming home baby
Your the tops
Give it to me now!

Four a.m. we ran a miracle mile
We're flat broke but hey we do it in style
The bad rich
God's flying in for your trial

But when the night is falling
You cannot find a friend (friend)
You feel your tree is breaking
Just bend...

You've got the music in you
Don't let go
You've got the music in you
One dance left
This world is gonna pull through
Don't give up
You've got a reason to live
Can't forget
We only get what we give

This whole damn world can fall apart
You'll be ok
Follow your heart
You're in harms way
I'm right behind
Now say you're mine...

You've got the music in you
Don't let go
You've got the music in you
One dance left
This world is gonna pull through
Don't give up
You've got a reason to live
Can't forget we only get what we give
Don't let go
I feel the music in you
Don't let go

Fly high
What's real can't die
You only get what you give
You're gonna get what you give
don't give up
Just dont be afraid to live

Health insurance rip off lying
F.D.A. big bankers buying
Fake computer crashes dining
Cloning while they're multiplying
Fashion shoots with beck and hanson
Courtney Love and Marilyn Manson
You're all fakes
Run to your mansions
Come around
We'll kick your ass in!!

Don't let go
One dance left
Don't give up
Can't forget

Re: Biz-tone.blogspot: The Jerk...The Genius!

Book Passages

Although, I've already written a couple of passages I like from this book (on my other blog Biz-Tone.blogspot.com), I thought I'd jot down another that I liked. I've been reading Steve Martin's book: Born Standing Up. It's a great book, and I didn't have any idea how intelligent Steve Martin is. His vocabulary is vast (or possibly his editor's), and his stories very interesting.

One passage that struck me was not one of beauty or happiness... but one more of darkness and of sadness. More human. The passage describes how Martin saw his relationship with his father, and is as follows:

"The rest of my childhood, we hardly spoke; there was little he said to me that was not critical, and there was little I said back that was not terse or mumbled. when I graduated from high school, he offered to buy me a tuxedo. I refused because I had learned from him to reject all aid and assistance; he detested extravagance and pleaded with us not to give him gifts. I felt, through a convoluted logic, that in my refusal, I was being a good son. I wish now that I had let him buy me that tuxedo, that I had let him be a dad. Having cut myself off from him, and by association the rest of the family, I was incurring psychological debts that would come due years later in the guise of romantic misconnections and a wrong-headed quest for solitude. "

While reading this passage, I was amazed at the introspective look Steve Martin was able to take of himself. The scope of this self-analysis, is short of astounding. I think in reading this passage of the book, I too had a relate-able realization. The part about refusing material things and the feeling of it making you a better person/son. I've been there, and still struggle with this.

Great passage! Great book! If you haven't already, you must check it out!

George Strait - I can still make Cheyenne

Song Lyrics

I am a huge George Strait fan, and this is one of my favorite songs. I grew up listening to George Strait, so I guess it should be only natural that his song lyrics end up in this blog.
I pretty much grew up in the city from the age of six or seven, but when I was younger... I spent a lot of time horse back with my parents. There are many pictures from my childhood where I am sporting a cowboy hat, or I am atop a horse in the saddle with dad. From this time on, I knew every word to every George Strait and Garth Brooks song.
I like the whole premise of this song. I can relate to it. I had a relationship kind of like this at one point in time. Sometimes you're just preoccupied by something... or there just isn't enough love... and the relationship takes a back seat. Cruel? Yes... but true. It happens. I think the part I really love in these lyrics is this:
"He said, I'm sorry it's come down to this. There's so much about you that I'm gonna miss. But it's alright baby... If I hurry I can still make Cheyenne. Gotta go now baby... If I hurry I can still make Cheyenne."
I've heard this song a lot through my life. I've always liked it... but there came a point one day, when the lyrics just hit me. "Wow, I can totally relate to the guy... and I know exactly what the girl is going through too. I've been there!" I think most of us can relate to these lyrics from one point in our lives or another.
(P.S. This photo is one I actually took at a George Strait concert a few years ago.)
George Strait - I can still make Cheyenne

Song Lyrics

Her telephone rang 'bout a quarter to nine
She heard his voice on the other end of the line
She wondered what was wrong this time
She never knew what his calls might bring
With a cowboy like him it could be anything
And she always expected the worst
In the back of her mind

He said, it's cold out here and I'm all alone
I didn't make the short go, again and I'm coming home
I know I've been away too long
I never got a chance to write or call
And I know this rodeo has been hard on us all
But I'll be home soon
and honey is there something wrong

She said, don't bother comin' home
By the time you get here I'll be long gone
There's somebody new and he sure ain't no rodeo man
He said, I'm sorry it's come down to this
There's so much about you that I'm gonna miss
But it's alright baby
If I hurry I can still make Cheyenne
Gotta go now baby
If I hurry I can still make Cheyenne

He left that phone danglin' off the hook
Then slowly turned around and gave it one last look
Then he just walked away
He aimed his truck towards that Wyoming line
With a little luck he could still get there in time
And in that Cheyenne wind he could still hear her say

She said, don't bother comin' home
By the time you get here I'll be long gone
There's somebody new and he sure ain't no rodeo man
He said, I'm sorry it's come down to this
There's so much about you that I'm gonna miss
But it's alright baby
If I hurry I can still make Cheyenne
Gotta go now baby
If I hurry I can still make Cheyenne

Hemingway's Shortest Story.

Story

I can't actually remember how I found this short story by Ernest Hemingway. I do know that it has forever been cemented in my mind. It's the shortest story Hemingway ever wrote (or at least to the best of my knowledge). For me, I find that the beauty of this story is in it's simplicity and in it's emotion. To be able to say so much, with so little... well it's admirable and it's impressive. The short story is six words in total, as follows:

"For sale: baby shoes, never worn."

Whilst searching for this exact story, the google search results returned a page with a contest based on this short. It was for others to also write a six word story as well. There were some great attempts. My favorite of those is as follows:

TIME MACHINE REACHES FUTURE!!! … nobody there …

- Harry Harrison

Here is a link to the wired web page I found this on. http://www.wired.com/wired/archive/14.11/sixwords.html

Of course, Hemingway is most well known for The Old Man and The Sea. He lived just shy of 62 years and died in 1961 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ernest_Hemingway). The following is dedicated to Hemingway's memory:

He passed in 1961, our loss.

Number One Song

Song

Like a rolling stone: By Bob Dylan

Alright, so I thought it might be fitting to kick off the first post of a blog titled "Song Lyrics n' lines" with the number one song ever (well, according to Rolling Stone dot com)! Is it a little strange that a magazine named Rolling Stone nominated a song called "Like a Rolling Stone," as the number one song of all time? Well, you can read more about it here: http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/6595846/like_a_rolling_stone.

The Lyrics:

Once upon a time you dressed so fine
You threw the bums a dime in your prime, didn't you?
People'd call, say,
"Beware doll, you're bound to fall"
You thought they were all kiddin' you
You used to laugh about
Everybody that was hangin' out
Now you don't talk so loud
Now you don't seem so proud
About having to be scrounging for your next meal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be without a home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You've gone to the finest school all right,
Miss Lonely
But you know you only used to get juiced in it
Nobody has ever taught you how to live out on the street
And now you're gonna have to get used to it
You said you'd never compromise
With the mystery tramp, but now you realize
He's not selling any alibis
As you stare into the vacuum of his eyes
And say do you want to make a deal?

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
A complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?

You never turned around to see the frowns on the jugglers and the clowns
When they all did tricks for you
You never understood that it ain't no good
You shouldn't let other people get your kicks for you
You used to ride on the chrome horse with your diplomat
Who carried on his shoulder a Siamese cat
Ain't it hard when you discover that
He really wasn't where it's at
After he took from you everything he could steal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknownLike a rolling stone?

Princess on the steeple and all the pretty people
They're all drinkin', thinkin' that they got it made
Exchanging all precious gifts
But you'd better take your diamond ring, you'd better pawn it babe
You used to be so amused
At Napoleon in rags and the language that he used
Go to him now, he calls you, you can't refuse
When you ain't got nothing, you got nothing to lose
You're invisible now, you got no secrets to conceal.

How does it feel
How does it feel
To be on your own
With no direction home
Like a complete unknown
Like a rolling stone?
